Modern Warfare 4 Won't Launch on Xbox Game Pass
Activision has confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 won't launch on Xbox Game Pass when it releases on October 23. Australian players will need to purchase the game separately, with the Standard Edition priced at AU$109.95. Game Pass availability isn't planned until late 2027.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches next week, but Xbox Game Pass subscribers will need to wait considerably longer to play it through their subscription.
Microsoft and Activision have confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will launch as a standalone purchase on October 23, 2026, with the game not expected to join Xbox Game Pass until the 2027 holiday season.
For Australian players, that means paying AU$109.95 for the Standard Edition or AU$149.95 for the Vault Edition through the Xbox Store if they want to jump in at launch.
It's a significant change from the previous Call of Duty releases, which were made available to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on day one.
No day-one Game Pass release this year
In an official announcement published on October 15, Activision confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 won't be included with Game Pass at launch.
This isn't an entirely unexpected development.
Back in April, Microsoft announced changes to its Game Pass strategy, including the removal of day-one access for future Call of Duty releases. At the time, the company indicated that new entries would arrive on the subscription service roughly a year after launch.
The latest announcement confirms a more specific window for Modern Warfare 4, with subscribers now looking towards late 2027.
Game Pass Ultimate members will still have access to previous releases, including Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III.
For anyone who's been relying on Game Pass to play the latest Call of Duty without purchasing it outright, though, this year's release is going to be a different experience.
What will Modern Warfare 4 cost in Australia?
The Australian Xbox Store currently lists two editions:
- Standard Edition: AU$109.95
- Vault Edition: AU$149.95
The Vault Edition includes additional operator packs, weapon cosmetics, a season of BlackCell and bonuses for the returning DMZ mode.
Modern Warfare 4 also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing eligible purchases through Microsoft's ecosystem to be played on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC without buying another copy.
It's worth pointing out that Game Pass subscribers aren't being offered a separate way to access the new release at launch. An active subscription alone won't unlock Modern Warfare 4.
Early access begins before the official release
Players who digitally pre-order Modern Warfare 4 will get access to parts of the game ahead of October 23.
Campaign Early Access begins October 16, while the returning DMZ extraction mode opens to eligible players on October 20.
Digital pre-orders also include the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, Gilded Pearl Camo Pack and an Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint.
Xbox console players will receive a special translucent green version of the blueprint to celebrate the platform's 25th anniversary.
The full game launches on October 23, bringing its campaign, multiplayer and DMZ experiences together.
What does this mean for Game Pass?
Microsoft's decision to move Call of Duty away from day-one Game Pass access was announced months ago, but Modern Warfare 4 is one of the clearest examples of what that change means for subscribers.
Call of Duty is one of the industry's biggest annual releases, and having the latest entry available through a subscription was a substantial selling point for Game Pass Ultimate.
Now, players are left with a fairly straightforward choice: purchase Modern Warfare 4 separately or wait until late next year for its planned Game Pass arrival.
There's still plenty of value to be found elsewhere in the Game Pass catalogue, but the removal of day-one Call of Duty releases changes the equation for anyone who subscribed primarily to play the latest instalment.
It'll be interesting to see how many players choose to purchase Modern Warfare 4 outright rather than wait for it to reach the service.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
